There are a range of visa options in the work visa category. These visas allow employers to fill labour shortages with skilled foreign workers.
The visa options in this category include
Temporary Skilled Shortage visa (subclass 482)
This is a temporary visa option. This visa allows the person to live and work for their sponsoring employer from 2 to 4 years. Family unit members may also be given this visa to accompany the main applicant.
To be eligible for this visa you will need to be sponsored and nominated by an Australian employer. You will also need to demonstrate 2 years of work experience to qualify for this visa.
There are two streams in this visa option –
- Temporary Skill Shortage Visa Subclass 482- Short Stream:
For this stream of the visa, you must be sponsored to work in an occupation listed on the Short term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL).
- Temporary Skill Shortage Visa Subclass 482- Medium Stream:
For this stream of the visa, you must be sponsored to work in an occupation listed on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL).
This visa is given for up to 2 years or for up to 4 years depending on the nominated occupation.
Employer Sponsored visa (subclass 186)
This is a permanent visa option. This visa allows the skilled worker, nominated by an employer, to live and work permanently in Australia.
Generally, to qualify for this visa you will need to demonstrate 3 years of work experience in an occupation on the relevant skilled occupation list. You must also have competent English to qualify for this visa.
Regional Employer Sponsored visa (subclass 494)
This is a temporary visa option allowing you to live and work for an employer in a designated area.
Generally, to qualify for this visa you will need to be nominated by an employer in designated area, be nominated for an occupation on the relevant skilled occupation list, have suitable skill assessment and English abilities.
This visa option will allow you to consider your eligibility under the permanent residence visa (subclass 491).
Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional) visa (subclass 191)
This visa option does not commence until 16 November 2022. Eligible 491 and 494 visa holders will be able to apply for permanent residency using this visa option. To qualify for this visa the person will need to demonstrate that they have lived and work in designated area for 3 years and earned an income equal to or greater than the income threshold.
